Intel have released details and launched the latest in their tick-tock CPU upgrade path, 'Cascade-Lake SP'. As the successor to Skylake-SP, Cascade-lake is a 14nm process based on the Purley platform. There have been updates to i7, and i9 CPUs, but this page concentrates on server grade hardware only.

Preliminary details of Cascade Lake SP Processors are:

  • Utilises the same socket and pinout as Skylake-SP
  • Same core count and IO capabilities
  • Introduction of hardware-based Spectre and Meltdown mitigation
  • Increase in overall clock speeds thanks to a change in process improving power efficiency
  • Changes to memory controller to enable direct interface with Intel Optane DCPMM DIMMs
  • Memory channels can be shared between regular DIMMs and Optane DCPMM DIMMs
    • Three different modes of Optane usage:
      • App Direct Mode - both applications and operating system are aware there are two distinct types of memory in operation. Both Load and Store. Operations that require lowest latency use the standard 2999MHz Memory DIMMs, otherwise data is dropped into the Optane higher latency DIMMs. This mode is persistant, but requires an Operating System or Hypervisor to support a persistant memory-aware file system. E.g. Windows Server 2019, or VMware ESX v6.7 U1.
      • Memory Mode - applications and operating system are presented with one large pool of volatile memory, the same as DRAM today. Memory controllers are charged with sorting and ordering access to data; first checking whether the data is within DRAM-cache, if not it locates the data within the Optane DIMMs. The DRAM, in this case, acts as fast cache for the most frequently accessed data, with the Optane memory acting as large capacity. This mode does not require the OS to be DCPMM aware.
      • Mixed-Memory Mode - a combination of Memory Mode and AppDirect Mode, where a portion of the DCPMMs are used for the memory mode operations, and all remaining capacity used for AppDirect mode.
  • Use of Optane will enable >3TiB of system memory
  • Higher data rate of 2999 MT/s, against 2666 MT/s
  • Memory bandwidth of 21.33 GB/s, with aggregate of 128 GB/s
  • First use of 'mesh interconnect architecture'
  • 48 lanes of PCIe per Socket
  • Added AVX-512 Vector Neural Network Instructions - reducing memory bandwidth required to perform scalar-pair multiply
  • 'M' suffix denotes Medium Memory Tier 2TiB memory capacity
  • 'L' suffix denotes Large Memory Tier 4.5TiB memory capacity
  • 'T' suffix denotes High Tcase
  • 'Y' suffix denotes Speed Select
  • 'S' suffix denotes Search Optimised
  • 'U' suffix denotes single socket version, with no UPI included (6212U, 6210U, 6209U)
