NVEdge FEATURES
NVEdge has a scale-up architecture and leverages NVMe over Fabrics (NVMe-of).
The software provides an elegant answer for settings that demand high availability as well as exceptional performance.
Excelero NVEdge provides important enterprise storage features for simplified deployment, efficiency and operation.
On the hardware side, it supports dual-port NVMe drives, dual controllers (with fast failover, less than 100 ms), active/active controller operation and active/passive logical volume access.
Data services include RAID10 data protection, thousands of striped, thin-provisioned volumes of up to 1PB each and enterprise grade block checksums (CRC 16/32/64).
PLATFORMS & REQUIREMENTS
Excelero realizes that different use cases will call for different levels of performance, power utilization and cost.
Thus, preserving Excelero’s heritage of ultimate flexibility, NVEdge has been architected and optimized for x86, ARM and SmartNIC based HA platforms.
X86 based systems from Intel and AMD can potentially offer higher levels of aggregate performance, while those based around SmartNIC-based architectures such as Mellanox BlueField™ and Broadcom Stingray™ may offer lower power consumption and cost.
NVEdge software was architected to support a wide range of HA hardware with minimal hardware requirements.
These requirements are simply that each controller has PCIe connectivity to all drives, and that the controllers can communicate with each other over a network.
The controllers communicate over both the network and drive pairs to identify connectivity (failure) issues.
NVEdge is an IO engine optimized to make use of all system resources in the most efficient manner to provide the highest levels of service and performance at the lowest latency.
OEMs or large integrators can license the software and work with Excelero to provide the necessary chassis/platform integration services to make a complete product.
PERFORMANCE & REFERENCE ARCHITECTURES
OEM’s and large integrators can choose the hardware platform that best meets their needs and Excelero’s NVEdge will extract all the performance capability of the platform, regardless of architecture.
Lastly, based in part on SPDK for writing high performance, scalable, user-mode storage applications, NVEdge supports both RDMA (InfiniBand or Ethernet) and TCP/IP networking.
NVEdge performance has been tested on systems based on the Mellanox Bluefield SmartNIC as well as on x86 based platforms:
- Reference architectures based on a single 100Gb SmartNIC per controller (2 controllers per chassis) such as Mellanox Bluefield can expect over 2.7M 4K IOPs, or over 5.4 million 4K IOPs in a single chassis with drives that can provide sufficient IOPs (at least 8 drives @ 750K IOPS each).
- Reference Architectures based on Intel or AMD x86 architecture with discrete NICs can expect to achieve full bandwidth per NIC, up to 10M 4K IOPs per controller. With sufficient NVMe drive resources, a dual controller chassis can provide as many as 20M 4K IOPs with at least 800 Gb/s of aggregate bandwidth.
