Oracle have released the 2nd generation of its Oracle Database Appliance, the X3-2 version. With more compute, memory and storage capacity the X3-2 is aimed at Small to Medium business who have an Oracle environment - that don't need Exadata scale deployments.

SuperMicro have released their Hyper-Speed line of servers aimed at High Frequency Trading applications. Utilising over-clocked, memory tuning, and additional cooling efficiencies they have gained up to 30% decrease in latency - although not at the expense of reliability.

Fujitsu have released details on their 'Athena' server line up, featuring its own 16 core SPARC64-X processors. Full details are yet to be released by Oracle, but the 'M10' product family have been released by Fujitsu - we expect an Oracle release in the very near future.

At OpenWorld 2012, Oracle released details about the latest version of their Exadata system. With greatly increased main and flash memory, the X3 will allow companies to keep most of their databases in memory - rather than out on disk drives. As per other Exadata database machines Intel Xeon Sandy Bridge chips take centre stage.

Earlier this year nVidia and Fujitsu announced that the CX400 S1 would offer high performance GPU-accelerated computing. The CX400 is already utilised for high density, compact form factor applications with half-wide, dual socket server nodes. Combining the CPU multicore power with the parallel processing cores of the GPU has given the HPC industry a new computing model.

Although unavailable until June, HP have 'pre announced' the new CPU availability in the Gen8 range. The new E5-2400 chips will be available in the DL360, DL380, ML350 and BL420c Gen8 servers, however full details are yet to be disclosed. On the Opteron chips, availability will be in the DL385p, and the BL465c.

Oracle have released 5 new servers in line with HP, IBM and Fujitsu's latest Sandy Bridge E5-2600 offerings. There are 3 rackable and 2 blade servers new to the Oracle lineup. Rather than hold a large press conference, Oracle hosted a smaller scale webcast exclaiming that the new servers are "the industry's best x86 plaform for Oracle applications."

Released this month are the Gen8 HP ProLiant servers. Available in DL, ML, SL and Workstation format and featuring Intel's Sandy Bridge processor architecture - they're set to drastically improve on the G7's already impressive abilities. HP's tests have shown a 33% increase in Administrator productivity, with a 66% faster problem resolution when using Gen8 Servers.
