Intel have released their latest update to their Xeon E5 line up, in the form of Haswell. Offering up to 18 cores, this is most exciting release by Intel in a long while. Frequency scaling, as seen before, is still in place; as is DDR4 architecture and cache monitoring.
The E2-2600 v3 Haswell-EP chips are based on the 22nm process technology, just like its precedessor. Bringing with it features such as HyperThreading, PCIe 3.0, and 'Turbo' mode for higher clock speed when necessary. Whether these Haswell chips can be locked in those turbo frequencies remains to be seen.
With regards to caching - it's delivered at up to 45 MB of L3, with a dual ring bus that uses multiple interfaces to maximise cross-chip bandwith. Combining the new features and the additional 50% core count the E5-2600 v3 Haswell-EP line up crushes even it's own v2 pre-decessor by as much as 20%.
The gains are subjective depending on your core-count to clock-speed dependancy.
The DDR4 memory is served up at 2,133 MHz in the most performant chips, a nice little jump up from 1,866 MHz of Ivy-Bridge based architecture.
Top of the range is the E5-2699 v3, with 45 MB of L3, 2,133MHz memory, and 2.3 GHz of clock speed. If you don't require such performance, there are plenty (22) of options to chose from.
